OBI GmbH & Co. Deutschland KG is one of Europe's leading DIY retailers, headquartered in Wermelskirchen, Germany. With a network of 668 shops across the continent - more than half of them in Germany - OBI has built up a strong reputation for offering a wide range of DIY, gardening and home improvement products, suitable for both professional and private customers.
Its international expansion has been particularly successful in Central and Eastern Europe, where Poland is emerging as a key market. In this country, OBI operates several dozen superstores, strategically located in major conurbations such as Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław and Gdańsk, serving as hubs for home improvement solutions and excellent customer service.

 

Challenge

OBI's superstores in Poland face a number of operational challenges specific to the DIY sector.

Firstly, theft - both internal and external - remains a persistent problem, particularly for high-value items such as power tools and electronic equipment, which are easy to conceal and resell.

Secondly, the size and configuration of these shops, which are often vast, covering several thousand square metres, make it difficult to monitor all areas exhaustively, particularly during busy hours or promotional events.

Thirdly, stock losses due to poor management, uncontrolled access to storage areas or procedural breaches add a further level of complexity, impacting on both profitability and customer satisfaction.

These challenges require robust and scalable security solutions, tailored to the dynamics of superstores.

Solutions implemented

To address the issues of theft, operational complexity and inventory loss, OBI has deployed a complete video surveillance (CCTV) solution in its superstores in Poland.

1 - This includes the strategic installation of high-definition cameras in key areas such as entrances, checkouts and high-risk aisles, all connected to a centralised surveillance system.

2 - The solution also includes a regular maintenance service to ensure optimum performance, as well as staff training to improve incident management.

3 - By combining intelligent detection functionalities with store-specific layouts, OBI has greatly enhanced loss prevention, simplified security operations and improved customer and employee safety.
