What is a fire risk assessment?
In the United States, employers are required to take appropriate measures to protect employees from workplace fire hazards under federal workplace safety requirements. OSHA's regulations include specific requirements for fire prevention plans, emergency action plans, portable fire extinguishers and other fire protection measures, depending on the workplace and applicable standards.
A fire risk assessment involves a thorough review of your premises to identify potential fire hazards and assess the level of risk they pose. This includes examining sources of ignition, combustible materials and the overall layout and use of the building.
Once hazards have been identified, appropriate measures can be put in place to reduce or eliminate risk. This may include removing hazards, improving fire detection systems or installing suitable fire extinguishers.
It is also essential to identify individuals who may be particularly vulnerable in the event of a fire. This could include people with mobility limitations, those working in high-risk areas, or individuals who are unfamiliar with the building.
Based on this assessment, appropriate emergency action and evacuation procedures should be established, and employees should receive the necessary fire safety training so they understand how to respond in the event of a fire.
