SHERLOCK HOLMES MUSEUM

Modernising and ensuring the long-term future of the security systems at a historic London landmark.

TALK TO AN EXPERT

The Sherlock Holmes Museum, located at the famous address of 221B Baker Street in London, welcomes thousands of visitors each year attracted by its rich literary heritage and unique historical setting. Housed in a multi-storey Georgian townhouse and home to valuable artefacts, the museum needed a robust and modern security solution. Scutum was asked to assess the existing systems, recommend improvements and implement a future-proof solution to enhance security, facilitate remote monitoring and support long-term operational requirements.

The Challenge

The museum was facing growing security concerns due to outdated CCTV and surveillance systems, creating potential vulnerabilities in a narrow, multi-storey building. With compact interior spaces spread over several floors and thousands of visitors every year, the museum needed improved visibility while preserving its historic atmosphere. The management was also looking for a scalable solution, capable of adapting to future needs to ensure the continued protection of visitors and collections.

Solutions Implemented

Scutum took charge of all security at the museum, including ongoing maintenance of all CCTV cameras and recording systems. High definition cameras were discreetly installed throughout the building to preserve the period aesthetic while improving coverage. Recording and storage systems have been upgraded to ensure continuous and reliable preservation of images, while remote access now allows management to monitor the museum in real time from a smartphone or other device. The infrastructure put in place is modular, allowing for future extensions without major disruption. All the work has been carefully coordinated to minimise the impact on day-to-day operations and preserve the visitor experience.
