How Was Fire Discovered?
The origins of fire go back to the earliest stages of the universe, but its discovery by humans marked a turning point in our evolution. While mythology, such as the Greek story of Prometheus, suggests fire was gifted to humanity, in reality it was first encountered through natural events such as lightning strikes or intense heat igniting dry vegetation.
Early humans likely learned to control fire from these natural sources. Evidence suggests that members of the Homo family were using fire as far back as one million years ago, although regular and controlled use is more reliably dated to between 300,000 and 400,000 years ago.
