What is a Dead Man's Handle?
A dead man's handle is a safety feature designed to protect lone workers by automatically raising an alarm if the user becomes incapacitated due to a fall, loss of consciousness or serious accident.
When the device detects a prolonged lack of movement or a fall, an alert is automatically transmitted to a remote monitoring centre. Depending on the emergency procedures agreed with the employer, the monitoring centre can contact the employee, notify designated emergency contacts and, where necessary, alert the appropriate emergency services.
Also known as a Lone Worker Device or Lone Worker Alarm, these solutions are available in a range of formats, including smartphones, badges, dedicated devices and smart watches.
Suitable for both mobile and stationary workers, these devices are lightweight, discreet and designed to operate in a variety of environments, including demanding or high-risk settings.
Most lone worker devices also function as communication tools, enabling users to make and receive calls. This allows the monitoring centre to assess the situation, eliminate false alarms and determine the most appropriate response.
Many devices also incorporate GPS location technology, enabling the precise location of the lone worker to be identified and helping emergency services reach them as quickly as possible.
